Family moving house

Making the decision to up sticks and move elsewhere is stressful when it's just you and a partner making the move, let alone if you are part of a family with your own brood to prioritise too!

Relocating to a new home can be super exciting but it is a huge decision that brings plenty of lifestyle changes for the whole family. Having little ones when you are moving house brings an extra amount of complexity to the experience. However, no matter how much preparation you put into this, it's unlikely that the process will be totally hassle-free.

Nevertheless, you don’t need to need to put yourself through any additional stress throughout this process just because you’re moving house with your clan. With just a little prep and organisation you’ll get the move over and done with seamlessly, getting you on the right path to your new home life.

Your children may be nervous about the idea of living somewhere else and, understandably, become rather attached to their home comforts and surroundings. Nevertheless, change is a big part of life and, although it can be nerve wracking, there are a couple of things you can do to help them throughout this process and make the process easier.

Communication

The fact that you’re moving home should by no means be a last minute thing that is mentioned to your kids. Your children will need some time to adjust to this idea. The best way to tackle this is to come together as a family and talk about it; doing so will acclimate them to the idea and reduce any anxiety they may have.

A similar process applies when you have older children and teenagers. The shortest amount of time you should let them know about the move is probably around a month before, as this gives them a decent amount of time but shouldn’t be a long enough for them to panic excessively. It's important that you reinforce that all of the normal, comfortable routines of their home life as they know it, will continue.

It's crucial that you reiterate to them that all of the normal aspects of their day to day life will remain the same and all of their belongings will be moving with you too. Once the move is done, try and maintain any old routines you had such as family dinners or movie nights- continuity is key.

Get everyone on-board

Getting your kids involved by giving them a job or a bit of responsibility is a really good way of getting them engaged and even getting them excited about the move - not just when it comes to packing.

Getting them to pack up their own possessions and deciding how they might want to lay out their own bedroom is also a great chance for decluttering and gives you the opportunity to give any unwanted items to charity.

Get the kids’ room organised as a priority

Making it as homely as possible in those early stages of moving in will make the transition a little easier for them. Also on a practical level, it will keep them from getting under the removal team’s feet during the move if they have their room up and together early on.
